Wiseman Residence and LEED status.
The Wiseman home exemplifies the ethic of true sustainability.
Today we are inundated with buzzwords such as "green", "environmentally friendly", and "Sustainability". These terms are often skewed by current marketing that suggests these ideas are something to be purchased and applied as an expensive afterthought in the home design and construction process. The true mission of a "green" home is to minimize lifecycle energy and resource consumption while creating a healthy and comfortable living environment.
The homeowner, Mike Wiseman of Dowling Sandholm Architects, and Constructive Solutions Inc; (Energy Star Partner, LEED for Homes Registered) collaborated on this high-performance home using LEED for Homes and Energy Star Requirements as guiding principles. Site selection, building orientation, room layout, and window placement all focus on passive and active solar energy potential targeting future "Net Zero" energy consumption. Other features include a high efficiency heating and ventilation system, low-energy light fixtures, recycled interior doors, and Structural Insulated Panel construction. The materials and processes for the home were selected not on the basis of "green" product labeling, but only after a thorough cost-benefit analysis which weighed initial cost versus life-cycle cost. The use of construction techniques and materials known for their longevity and efficiency will result in a much lower annual operating and maintenance cost. Performance has been verified through building envelope and duct system testing and analysis. Finally, the home has met preliminary approval and is waiting for final certification by the USGBC LEED for Homes Program.
